About this event

For anyone who writes to make sense of things, even if you don’t consider yourself a “writer.” No prior experience needed, just bring yourself, and some ideas to pen in paper. Curious about poetry, but not sure where to start? This beginner-friendly session is an introduction to poetry as a way of noticing, expressing, and shaping experience through language. We’ll explore some of the basic building blocks of poetry, including line, stanza, rhythm, rhyme, and figures of speech. Not as rigid rules, but as tools that help language carry feeling, image, and meaning. Curious about where/how to publish your poems? We'll also give tips on where to start publishing/submitting your work online. \-\-\- Agenda: • 1:00 - Introductions and Chit Chat for early birds • 1:30 - What is Poetry • 2:00 \- How to read/write Poetry • 2:30 \- Some common forms of poetry • 3:00 \- Writing Prompts and Group Sharing Time will be given for Writing, Revising & Sharing The last hour will give participants time to write or continue developing a piece from the earlier exercises. We’ll also spend time reflecting, revising, and optionally sharing what we’ve written. Sharing is optional. You can read a full poem, share a few lines, or simply listen.
