About this event

Activity Type: Hiking\, Local Walks\, & Trail Running \| Hiking Difficulty: 3 - Easy Trip Leader(s): Lisa Lombardo, Kelsey Marbach Registration Type: Registration Please Click Here to RSVP: https://activities.outdoors.org/a5UVX000001Ed7N (https://activities.outdoors.org/a5UVX000001Ed7N?utm_source=meetup&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=amc20sand30s&utm_content=22765) Audience: 20’s & 30’s Description: The Boxer's Trail is one of Fairmount Park's well-kept secrets. It is named for the many Philly boxers - Joe Frazier, Bennie Briscoe, Bernard Hopkins - who ran the trail as part of their boxing training regimen. Though the trail once fell into a state of disrepair, it underwent a complete restoration some years ago. Our hike begins at the Smith Memorial Playground parking lot. From the playground, we will hike down to Fountain Green Rd, which we will cross to pick up the Boxer's Trail. The trail is narrow at times, and we may scale a fallen log and encounter tree roots. About 60% of the hike will be on a shady, wooded path. When we reach the Fairmount Park Athletic Field, the path will become paved. An added bonus of this route: we will pass 4 of the key Fairmount park mansions: Rockland, Laurel Hill, Woodford and Strawberry Mansion. These classic homes, which date back to the 1700 and 1800s, were summer homes to prominent Philadelphia families. Our outbound hike will terminate at the Strawberry Mansion loop, where we will see the Robin Hood Dell East concert venue, a smaller version of the Mann Music venue. We will then retrace our steps to our cars at the playground parking lot. Expect about 350ft of elevation spread out over 5.25 miles. Assume August heat and bring LOTS OF WATER and sturdy shoes. Snacks are good as there are places we can stop to munch and chat. (No sandals, please. They don't play well with the gravel.) Post trip, we can head to Boathouse Row for a tasty lunch at the Cosmic Cafe. Heavy rain or inclement weather cancels the hike. Look for a message from your leader if the weather seems doubtful. This trip is intended to be a 20s/30s affinity trip. Participation is limited to those who identify with this age group. If you have any questions about eligibility or the nature of this trip, please contact the trip leader by email for more information. Please note: In order to comply with Pennsylvania Youth Protection Laws, all children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. This policy applies for all events offered by the Delaware Valley Chapter as well as any other Chapter events within the state of Pennsylvania.
