About this event

When should we stick to our principles, and when should we have the flexibility to adapt? Known for his integrity, courage, and refusal to compromise, the Stoic senator Cato became a controversial and much-discussed figure among later Stoics. In this session, we'll read and discuss short passages about the challenges and thorny dilemmas Cato faced, considering integrity, courage, compromise, and practical wisdom, and how these questions apply to our everyday lives. A printout will be provided, including short extracts about Cato and passages by Stoic philosophers on related themes. No preparation or previous knowledge is required. Optional: for an example of the inspiration and discussion that Cato's life continues to provoke, see this article: https://dailystoic.com/stoicism-for-modern-stresses-5-lessons-from-cato/ \*\*Please note the time and venue. It's a new place and 30 minutes earlier than usual.\*\* Bunkyo Citizen's Center (https://maps.app.goo.gl/rJUK5cj9LsWsybNw8), Meeting Room 2-B There is a waitlist, so if you need to change your reservation, please do so promptly to allow others enough notice to attend.
