Notes from Underground by Fyodor Dostoevsky

About this event

Notes from Underground by Fyodor Dostoevsky is a groundbreaking work often considered one of the first existentialist novels, offering a deeply introspective and unsettling exploration of human consciousness, free will, and inner contradiction. Through the voice of the isolated and self-contradictory Underground Man, Dostoevsky challenges the idea that people are purely rational beings, instead revealing how spite, insecurity, and a desire for both connection and withdrawal shape our behavior. The novel critiques the optimistic, rationalist philosophies of its time and anticipates later existentialist thought by confronting uncomfortable truths about identity, self-awareness, and the human tendency toward self-sabotage. Its enduring significance lies in how it forces readers to grapple with the irrational and often darker sides of human nature, making it a powerful starting point for discussions about philosophy, psychology, and what it truly means to understand ourselves. Looking forward to seeing you!
