An Evening with a Bard: a Brief History of the World Through the Lens of Myth

About this event

Where We Came From, How We Got to Where We Are, and Where We Might Go From Here For thousands of years, humans have told stories to make sense of existence. Myths have shaped civilisations, inspired religions, influenced political systems, and guided our understanding of who we are and how we should live. But what can these ancient narratives tell us about the modern world and our collective future? In this fascinating and wide-ranging talk, Jonathan Drew will explore the history of humanity through the lens of myth. From the creation stories of ancient cultures and the heroic journeys of legendary figures, to the great religious traditions and the modern myths that underpin contemporary society, Jonathan will examine how the stories we tell have shaped our evolution as individuals and societies. Together, we will trace humanity's journey from our earliest origins, through the rise and fall of civilisations, to the challenges and opportunities of the present day. Along the way, we will consider how myth continues to influence our beliefs, values, identities and aspirations, often in ways we scarcely recognise. As we face unprecedented technological, environmental and social change, what new stories are emerging? What myths are guiding us today? And what narratives might help us navigate an uncertain future? Whether you are interested in history, philosophy, psychology, religion, culture, or simply the big questions of human existence, this talk promises to offer fresh perspectives and stimulating discussion.
