About this event

Believe it or not here at Sacred Spaces we rely on a lot of movies. Hong Kong movies especially. Many of the places and things that we visit directly relate to movies are famous or infamous in Hong Kong Cinema. We've even had film screenings in the past to help us catch up on "must see" movies. I can provide a list later but let me assure you that the Hong Kong Film Archive has been important to all my research over the years. One of the lesser known museums in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Film Archive has been screening hard-to-see films and presenting movie exhibits for years. In fact, this year is the 25th Anniversary of the Film Archive in Sai Wan Ho. Let's all take advantage of this free exhibit celebrating the Film Archive and familiarize yourself with the location and the films that they screen. Who knows maybe you'll start to take advantage of viewing some classic Cantonese language films there! From the website... The Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA) has long been dedicated to the acquisition, preservation, and promotion of Hong Kong's film history and culture. In 2026, as the HKFA celebrates its 25th anniversary, a special exhibition focusing on its film acquisition and restoration efforts will be held. This exhibition highlights cinematic treasures the Archive has collected from around the world, showcasing footage and related materials, along with oral history interviews with acquisition team members and donors, through multimedia installations. Visitors will be guided through the global footprints of Hong Kong cinema. The exhibition recreates an overseas acquisition site and a ‘Film Vault Tunnel’ that imitates the film vault of the HKFA, offering immersive experiences that bring out the challenges of acquisition work and the environment of film preservation. It also features actual equipment used by professional conservators, introducing visitors to restoration procedures and the technical knowledge entailed. The HKFA partners with the Hong Kong Design Institute, inviting their Digital Media students to design two games for the exhibition, allowing visitors to experience the fun of acquisition and conservation.
