Les grands travaux d’Haussmann, un demi-siècle après le Ier Empire, ont un peu fait oublier que Napoléon consul, puis empereur, s’intéressa de très près à notre capitale et la dota d’un grand nombre de créations techniques et monumentales : réseau des égouts, approvisionnement en eau, nouveaux cimetières, mais surtout de nombreux édifices, lieux de pouvoir et de prestige : Arcs de Triomphe, colonnes, grand axe est-ouest de paris, fontaines, aménagement du Louvre, etc.
