About this event

For hundreds of thousands of years, the human family tree was crowded. The Pleistocene landscape was shared by the "Big Three" of the hominin world: Homo sapiens, Neanderthals, and Denisovans. Yet, as the climate shifted and we moved toward the Holocene, only one lineage survived to carry the flame forward. This session serves as the biological capstone of our hominin evolutionary journey. Drawing on both returning and newly introduced peer-reviewed sources, including the latest ancient genomic data and fossil records, we will attempt to make an inference to the best explanation regarding our survival. We will explore the genetic, environmental, and cultural factors that allowed Homo sapiens to navigate a volatile world. More than just a review of the science, this event features a strong thematic narrative that connects directly to the larger "Fire, Cells, and Circuits" arc, exploring how the early embers of cultural technology ultimately allowed sapiens to emerge as the last hominin standing.
