(Special Edition) Practical Philosophy Meetup - Singapore 🇸🇬
About this event
Plato Walks Into a Bar Big questions. Practical decisions. A special collaboration between Practical Philosophy Club Singapore and FusekiB. Practical Philosophy brings critical thinkers together to dive deep into a topic, practise communicating and build community. All with no “official” philosophy knowledge required 😎 For this session, we’ll explore strategy, uncertainty and decision-making through the ancient game of Go. Rather than only talking about the topic, we’ll experience it. Through guided gameplay and open conversation, we’ll examine how we make decisions with incomplete information, respond when other people disrupt our plans and adapt when circumstances change. No Go or philosophy experience is required. Beginners are welcome. Come alone or bring a friend. The word is used for plans, goals, tactics and ways of thinking. Consider the different situations in which you have heard someone call a choice "strategic." 2\. What do you actually know\, and what do you only believe? You might face an unfamiliar situation, receive mixed signals from someone, or know what is happening but have no idea how it will turn out. Where is the line between the two? 3\. When does a belief become solid enough to act on? Think of a time you kept gathering opinions or data on a choice that was already yours to make. What made you finally stop treating it as an open question? 4\. How much of what you do is chosen\, and how much is caused by what is happening around you? A request, disagreement or unexpected event can draw you into responding while you have something you were already trying to do. 5\. If nothing ever goes to plan\, why plan? Think of something you mapped out in detail that ended up unfolding nothing like you expected. What was the plan actually for, in the end? 6\. Does sticking with your plan make you consistent\, or just stubborn? Does changing it make you adaptable\, or just unsure of yourself? Consider a goal you pursued for some time, such as learning something difficult, building a relationship, or changing a part of your life. 7\. What happens to your thinking when you have to explain it to someone else? Picture explaining a personal choice to someone who cares about you but sees the situation differently. 8\. Can a good decision lead to a bad outcome? Does that make the decision bad? Think of a choice you made without knowing how things would unfold, and how you viewed it after the result became clear. 9\. How do you work out what someone else wants? Someone may tell you directly, give you hints, or act in a way you did not expect. Consider a person whose choices have affected your own. 10\. Why does a moment that has never happened to you before still feel like something you recognise? Return to a particular moment on the board. Think about where you have encountered something similar outside the game.
