Philosophy Roundtable: Community
About this event
Please join us this Sunday to discuss the philosophy of 'Community'. Often I have heard people talk about things such as "community development"and "community members", and I feel "community" is often taken for granted. So I look forward to unpacking the concept with you this Sunday! We will meet at the Captain Melville at 2pm for a 2:15pm start sharp Please note the new $5 mandatory donation entry fee (cash or transfer on day) to help with MeetUp subscription costs There is no pre-requisite preparation necessary, nor a philosophical background, all that is required is a curious mind. These discussions are both a Socrates Cafe style discussion and lively metaphysical dojo in the spirit of learning, sharing thoughts and friendly debate. We welcome your self-reflections! In addition feel free to question assumptions and be prepared to have your own assumptions questioned. This event is also posted to the Socrates Cafe group Possible questions: • What is a 'Community'? Is it just a group of people, or something me specific? Is it even a useful concept? • What level of commonality is needed for there to be a 'community'? (eg can we be in a community with non-humans?) • Which communities have you belonged to? Who defined your membership of that community -yourself, or others? Did you have a choice to be in the community or not? • Did you feel like you were part of a 'community'? What gave you that feeling? • Reflecting on your experience in communities, what are the qualities of a good community? • Do we have (extra) responsibilities for community members (eg over those who aren't)? Do others have extra responsibilities for us if we're a community member? If so what responsibilities are these? • Can non-humans form communities? and open to any other questions or curiosities about this topic people might have on the day! Hope to see you there!
