About this event

Adults. It’s a brand new century. Puccini’s Tosca is just hours away from its world premiere. All of Italy had swooned over La Bohème, and audiences were ready for more of that juicy, sentimental romance. They expected soft rock. What they got was…prog metal. So what happened? Join soprano Chloé Hurst, tenor Martin Renner Wallace and baritone Aaron Durand for Opera Adventures: TOSCA, as they step inside the fierce cultural pressure cooker that produced one of opera’s biggest hits. From Sarah Bernhardt’s influence on the original play to religion, politics, violence and literal class warfare onstage, we’ll dig into the history and music behind Puccini’s explosive masterpiece — with Perri Lo at the piano bringing the score to life. Opera Adventures is a series by Vancouver Public Library and Vancouver Opera that celebrates the power of the human voice. Please note: this event will happen in the Alice MacKay Room. Registration is required to attend, as it will help us ensure that everyone registered has a seat. Accessibility: VPL is committed to making our programs accessible for all.
