What Will People Think?
About this event
How much should we care what others think? Most of us do, but how much importance should we give to their opinions, and what role might courage play in dealing with these fears? The Stoics encourage us not to become overly concerned with other people’s judgements, yet they also emphasise that we are social beings. How can we find the courage to stand by our convictions while remaining considerate and open to criticism? When does indifference to others’ opinions become arrogance, insensitivity, or simply a way to dismiss uncomfortable feedback? These concerns may feel modern, but Stoic writings reveal how familiar they were in the ancient world. Through their ideas and our own experiences, we’ll discuss how to face our social fears while taking our relationships and responsibilities to others seriously. A printout will be provided.
