About this event

Adults. How do relationships drive a story? No matter the genre, a dynamic character is defined through their relationships to the characters around them. In this workshop, we will go beyond ideas of antagonists, allies, and foils, to find complex–and compelling–inter-character dynamics. We will explore ways to define a character’s fundamental values, and what happens when they meet someone whose motivations differ from their own. We will also explore the ways our writing, itself, exists as part of a larger dialogue. None of us write in a vacuum—whether we are aware of it or not, our work participates in a cultural conversation. Just like our characters, developing a writingpractice means understanding how we relate to the world at large-- This class is generously funded by the Canadian Poetry Fund a local donor-advised fund which fosters accessible public educational outreach for poetry and other forms of creative writing through the services of the Vancouver Public Library. -- Genki Ferguson grew up between Calgary, Canada, and Minamata, Japan. He is the author of Satellite Love (McClelland & Stewart, 2021) which was longlisted for the 2022 Canada Reads. His forthcoming novel THE LOVE AN ABALONE FEELS FOR THE SEA (Counterpoint Press, 2027), is about a boy, an ama diver, and a typhoon. He currently lives in Vancouver, Canada, with his wife.
