About this event

The Teachings of Silvanus reads like a father’s urgent letter to his son, a wisdom manual in the line of Proverbs, written in the voice of Paul’s companion Silvanus. It blends Hebrew wisdom tradition with Platonic and Stoic philosophy into a guide for the inner life. Its central image is a person as a contested city: the body is earth, the soul is pulled between the animal and the divine, and the mind is the rightful ruler that must take back the throne. Christ appears as Wisdom and Logos, descending into the underworld to break its bars. The text pushes back against some of the very ideas its neighbors in the jar teach, which raises the question of what it was doing in a Gnostic library at all. One passage from it even survives elsewhere under the name of St. Antony, the father of desert monasticism. Come ready to argue about whether Silvanus is a hidden Gnostic, an orthodox monk, or something in between, and about what it means to “knock on yourself as on a door.”
