From classics like Margaret Atwood’s Handmaid’s Tale to modern takes such as Cherie Dimaline’s The Marrow Thieves or Catherine Hernandez’s Crosshairs, dystopian fiction is a mainstay of Canadian sci-fi and fantasy. Why do we seek out cautionary tales when the real world is already so bleak? And how can prospective writers of dystopian speculative fiction write believable, immersive worlds? Join us for a creative writing workshop hosted by Aurora Award nominee and author, Rachel A. Rosen! Through a series of activities and guided exercises, participants will develop a literary toolbox to deepen their world-building and generate ideas for their own writing.
