Lost Holidays Revival Series: Bonfire Night
About this event
Bonfire Night, once celebrated in colonial America, has largely disappeared from American culture, with the last confirmed official celebration taking place in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1817. Also known as Guy Fawkes Night, the holiday has historically carried a rebellious spirit that sets it apart from traditional celebrations. This event aims to revive and reinvent that tradition without the commercialism and endless merchandising attached to modern holidays. It offers a chance to celebrate the season with a clean slate, free from corporate marketing. At the same time, seasonal “bleed” has pushed holidays and their merchandise earlier and earlier each year. As Christmas increasingly overshadows November, this revival seeks to reclaim November as a true autumn season and create a meaningful new tradition! If you would like to contribute to the event, please consider bringing a dish to share or consider contributing $5-10 to our GoFundMe to help cover the costs of renting the campfire ring and art supplies. Fall themed food and attire encouraged but not required. [gofund.me/3d922c5d6](gofund.me/3d922c5d6) As part of the traditional celebration we will do the effigy burning but with a modern twist where people will make their own smaller hand held ones before the bonfire starts out of simple burn safe materials at a crafting station and then toss it into the fire. (As opposed to the jumbo ones that are typically burned) You can make these of whatever you want as long as it's not of any living individuals or something that seems concerning. They could be fun, whimsical or deeply symbolic. Up to you! We look forward to celebrating with everyone!! Socrates Campfire Night will be held at the Sycamore Campfire Ring at Locust Grove Nature Center. Parking is at 7777 Democracy Boulevard. See detailed directions below.
