The Point of View Book Discussion Group: The Anxious Generation
About this event
All Adults, College Students, Older Adults, Young Adults (Ages 20-34). We are a book group for adults that reads a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction. We meet the 3rd* Wednesday of every month at 2:30 p.m. at the Central Library in Copley Square and on Zoom. Our choice for October is The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. Nonfiction. Social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. He shows how the “play-based childhood” began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the “phone-based childhood” in the early 2010s. He explains why social media damages girls more than boys and why boys have been withdrawing from the real world into the virtual world, with disastrous consequences for themselves, their families, and their societies. AVAILABILITY: Copies will be available for pick up at the Central Library Borrower Services desk after the previous month's discussion, until they are gone, or you may place holds on other copies or formats via the library catalog.
