Philosophical Discussion Concerning Love and Addiction
About this event
Be Drunk (Charles Baudelaire) You must be drunk always. That is everything: the only question. Not to feel the horrible burden of Time that crushes your shoulders and bends you earthward, you must be drunk without respite. But drunk on what? On wine, on poetry, on virtue—take your pick. But be drunk. And if it should chance, on the steps of a palace, in the green weeds of a ditch, in the dreary solitude of your bedroom, you awake, your drunkenness grown less or gone, ask of the wind, of the wave, a star, bird, clock, anything fleeing, any that moan, that roll along, that sing, that speak, ask what hour it is; and the wind, wave, star, bird, clock, will reply, “The hour to be drunk! Not to be Time’s racked slaves, be drunk; be drunk without respite. On wine, on poetry, on virtue—take your pick.” =================== Greetings, The French poet thinks that we should always be drunk with something without stopping, to be drunk on anything you choose: wine, poetry, music, or virtue. I'd say even love can be one of the things that we can be drunk on. That will depend on what we mean by love, of course. How do we distinguish between love and addiction? Do you also agree with the poet that we should constantly seek something to be drunk on? So as to occupy ourselves to be busy, and ultimately to distract ourselves from "the burden of time that crushes your shoulder"? From a certain rather blasphemous point of view, Jesus was drunk on seeking love and loving neighbours. Vincent van Gogh, on drawing and capturing nature on his canvas. But arguably, their love somehow resulted in untimely death for both of them. Does that mean it was, in fact, a form of addiction rather than love, since that costs someone untimely death?
