The Analytic Salon 10
About this event
We are turning ten! Our TENTH session will be on a branch of philosophy you may not have heard of: metaethics! Do you ever wonder if morality is actually real? If it's just relative to our society and culture? We've all heard of societies with often radically different moral practices and norms. Could they be wrong? Could we be wrong? Maybe everyone is right, or maybe no one is right, or maybe exactly one moral system is objectively right. Or is it all just emotions? There are big costs to any of these options. There are more options to take too. If you have relativist inclinations, you will want to come to this session. But you will also want to come if you think morality is objective. We will challenge it all, we will try to reach a conclusion, and we assure you, we will pass no (moral!) judgment on anyone, including moral nihilists. We will only judge your arguments, not your character. Along the way, we will say things like error-theory and expressivism. Cool stuff! This session will feature Columbia professor Justin Clarke-Doane! While you wait, you may want to check out this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1RXq_Mo4lg And if you like philosophy in British accent, here is a cool philosopher talking about metaethics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gs7fBx-zURw As always: No prior philosophy knowledge required. We will define all terms. Just come, uhm, as yourself, and we hope this conversation will change you. We will have philosophers on site guiding us through the questions and through some influential theories. We were struck last time by the intelligence and thoughtfulness of the attendees. We fully expect another smart, vivid discussion. Daily life offers few chances for discussion on deep topics we actually all have thoughts about. This is a space dedicated to that. Come meet new people, make friends, and share your smartest thoughts in a low-stakes environment. This is not a class! We will have refreshments (wine, cheese and crackers, fruit). As always, this event is 100% free. BUT --- our Center needs donations. Such donations can make sure the analytic salons keep running. Any and all amounts help. If you're so inclined, support us here (suggested donation of $5) --- it takes 30 seconds: https://www.givegab.com/campaigns/saul-kripke-center IMPORTANT NOTE ON RSVP-ing: RSVP is \*required\*. NOTE: We are sending this invitation to our special email list: if you are receiving this, it means you have already attended an event and we wanted to prioritize you before we make the event available to other partiful members. Our events fill up within hours and there is a significant waitlist. We can only accommodate about 35 people. If you are not reasonably confident you will attend, kindly put yourself on the waitlist/maybe-list and let someone else have the spot. RSVP here (partiful): https://partiful.com/e/vdagDpqPhh0qIGuf3aFU?c=74tVQzzL OR via meetup! (Put yourself on the waitlist on Partiful if meetup is full and you will likely be able to get a last minute spot.) \-\-\-\- FOR THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW US YET: The Analytic Salon is a series of philosophy gatherings where we crack the code of analytic philosophy. What is it? What is it for? And what is it all about? This is your chance to come meet real philosophers. We don't require ANY knowledge of analytic philosophy: this is meant to be a fun mini-lecture event followed by vivid (and respectful) discussion for non-specialists with sharp and curious minds. Let's chat. We believe quite strongly in logic, truth, rationality as a key to conversation and to intellectual exploration. Come hang with us! We believe in spreading the word of analytic philosophy beyond the ivory tower.
