About this event

Teens (Ages 13-18). The Banned Books Band is a teen-led summer book club dedicated to celebrating the freedom to read. Together, teens will explore a wide variety of banned and challenged books that have been labeled “inappropriate” or removed from schools and libraries. Through open discussion, creative activities, and critical thinking, participants will examine themes and perspectives that are often missing from traditional school curricula while learning about the impact of censorship and the importance of intellectual freedom. Meetings will take place biweekly on Saturdays from June 20 through August 22 and will run for 90 minutes each. Every session will focus on one banned or challenged title and include book discussions, games, crafts, or interactive activities connected to the reading. Participants can pick up copies of the books at Teen Central with a library card. Registration is suggested, but not required. Accessibility Notice: We strive to make our events accessible. To request a disability accommodation and/or language services, contact the department listed in the "Contact Info" pane on the right. Please allow at least two weeks to arrange accommodation. Programming at the Boston Public Library is funded through private support. To learn more about supporting the Library, please visit the Boston Public Library Fund's website.
