What Is Progress: Lunch and Learn: Sally Rand

In connection with What Is Progress?, now on display in the 3rd floor gallery of Harold Washington Library Center, patrons are invited to join this Lunch and Learn session on burlesque icon Sally Rand. Born in Missouri in 1904, Sally Rand became a sensational dancer, actress and arguably the largest attraction at the 1933-1934 World's Fair. It was at the Fair where her performances stirred up some of the most controversy she ever faced in her career, resulting in Rand being arrested four times in one day for indecent exposure. Her artistic life spanned four decades, and her famed ostrich fans are now part of the Chicago History Museum's permanent collection. This event invites patrons to reflect on Sally Rand's impact on today's culture and consider her place, and the place of women like her, in the narrative of progress.
