Sheung Wan Civic Centre Venue Partnership Scheme: 1587, A Year of No Significance

About this event

The year 1587 was a seemingly uneventful and bland year. Shen Shih-hsing the First Grand Secretary, managed to keep things in order. Yet, the period was not as peaceful as it seemed. The previous Grand Secretary Chang Chu-cheng was overthrown by the court officials and his ten-year reform went wasted. Even the general Ch’i Chi-kuang was dismissed though he had established himself for his success in suppressing Japanese pirates. Hai Jui, the eccentric official who was forced to retire earlier, was reappointed to public service. All the partisan and court politics had crippled the efficiency of the bureaucracy. The once ambitious Emperor Wanli, was now weighed down by the ceremonial court proceedings and the feud between the rival partisans. He became cynical, refused to see his courtiers, and neglected his imperial duties. The empire was paralysed by the inadequacies of the political milieu, and was gradually stepping towards the verge of disintegration. Though Wanli was the longest ruling emperor of the Ming Dynasty, it was also the last Han Chinese empire in history.
