About this event

Think for yourself. Not by yourself. At Premise (https://www.premiseinstitute.com/), we offer a chance to explore life's big questions. Meet new people and learn from each other through guided conversations sparked by thought-provoking readings and films. No expertise required. Register Please register directly on the Premise site so we can send you the readings, Zoom link, and details and stay organized. Premise participants come from many places, and this Meetup group is just one of them, so an RSVP here does not hold your spot. A free online Premise session: one morning, one big life question, two short readings. We like to think of ourselves as independent people, guided by our own beliefs and values. But put us in a group and things can change. We say something we don't quite believe, go along with something we don't want, or become acutely aware of who other people expect us to be. In this session, we'll ask what happens to us when other people are watching. Through George Orwell's Shooting an Elephant and Langston Hughes's Salvation, we'll explore two people caught between what they feel inside and what the people around them expect. Together, we'll explore: Why are other people's expectations so powerful? Who do we become in a group? Why is it sometimes so difficult to act on what we believe? And what does it take to stay true to ourselves when everyone seems to want something different? The readings will be sent as soon as you register, and preparation is designed to take under two hours. No prior experience with the authors or the ideas is expected. Come curious.
