About this event

Please join us this Sunday to discuss 'Power', it's meaing and manifestation for individuals, institutions and in general. Note: New Location We will meet at Good Nature Hotel at 2pm for a 2:15pm start sharp Please note the $5 mandatory donation entry fee (cash or transfer on day) to help with MeetUp subscription costs Suggested Reading/Listening: To help ground the debate, I suggest looking at - • Individual Power: Nietzsche's conception of the 'Will to Power'. Recommended listening: https://www.philosophizethis.org/podcast/the-will-to-power • Institutional Power: Foucault's conception of 'biopower'. Recommended listening: https://www.philosophizethis.org/podcast/foucault-power (Note: We will not explicitly focus on 'State Power' as that deserves its own topic.) Despite this, no philosophical background is required, all that is needed is a curious mind. These discussions are both a Socrates Cafe style exchange of ideas and a lively metaphysical dojo in the spirit of learning and friendly debate. We welcome your self-reflections! In addition feel free to question assumptions and be prepared to have your own assumptions questioned. Possible Discussion questions: Individual Power: 1. Do you agree with Nietzsche's idea that individual 'Power' is the ability to live in accordance with one's true self? 2. How have you used power to become your true self? (eg How did you deal with opposition and resistance?) Institutional Power: 1. Do you agree that the way we think about the world (and the policies implemented) is determined by intellectuals within certain fields? 2. What does this allow/prevent in our public life? 3. Are there alternatives? General questions: 1. Who/What grants one Power, or how is Power claimed? 2. Is claiming 'power' exclusive of others or inclusive? If so, to what extent? 3. Is power an objective or subjective phenomenon? Does it exist or is it purely a perception? Please feel free to also bring additional questions you would like to explore Looking forward to unpacking this Hope to see you there
