About this event

Setting boundaries is one of those skills we hear about all the time. We know boundaries are important for our wellbeing, but actually setting them can be much harder than knowing we should. Then there is that familiar phrase: “No is a full sentence.” And sometimes it is. But when you’re talking to someone you care deeply about, and you want to protect your own wellbeing while also nurturing the relationship, things can become a little more complicated. This psychoeducational workshop explores the psychology behind boundaries and why setting them can sometimes feel so uncomfortable. In this workshop, we will explore • What is a boundary? • Why do boundaries matter? • Why do we struggle to set boundaries? • How can our values help guide our boundaries? • The relationship between boundaries, self-care and self-compassion. • The neuropsychology behind why boundaries can feel difficult. • Setting and communicating boundaries within relationships. • Myths and misconceptions about boundaries. • How to respond when someone pushes back against a boundary, and why it should be expected. • Practical skills and strategies for communicating boundaries. What to expect on the day This is an educational workshop rather than an immersive, participation based experience. You won’t be expected to share personal experiences or perform exercises, although questions and discussion are welcome. You will receive a worksheet pack that we will discuss and that you can take home to work through in your own time and at your own pace. About Jo (your facilitator) Jo is a Christchurch-based registered counsellor with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Counselling. Her interest in boundaries comes not only from her professional training, but also from her own therapeutic journey and learning first-hand about the challenges of setting boundaries and having to navigate the pushback that can sometimes come with them. Her motivation for offering this workshop is her strong belief that mental health information should be easily accessible for all. Please note This workshop is psychoeducational in nature and is not therapy or counselling. It is designed to provide information, reflection and practical skills around understanding and communicating healthy boundaries.
