If you are curious about examining the hidden forces that influence our everyday choices and shape our identity, we warmly invite you to participate in this inaugural initiative. About the Session Consider the hobbies that filled your childhood: are they still part of who you are today, or did your environment quietly change what you hold onto? Have you picked up a hobby in Japan that you never would have considered back home? Or discovered a version of yourself that was more curious, more independent, more willing to wander? For our first session, we begin with something familiar: a hobby or interest you have picked up, rediscovered, or left behind since moving to Japan. But rather than treating these as individual interests or lifestyle choices, we explore a deeper question: what makes them possible in the first place? Take late night street photography or running for instance. Perhaps it never appealed to you back home- not due to a lack of interest, but maybe because unspoken calculations shaped your comfort level. • Could you stand still in unfamiliar surroundings for an extended period? • Could you carry expensive equipment without constantly monitoring your surroundings? • Was having a hobby itself considered a privilege? In Japan, a different set of conditions may change those calculations, making previously unexplored interests suddenly possible. The Architecture of Play hopes to examine the physical, social, and institutional conditions that shape what we feel free to explore, experience, and enjoy.
