About this event

Twenty-five years ago, neuroscientist Christof Koch bet philosopher David Chalmers that science would identify the brain mechanisms underlying consciousness. When the bet was settled in 2023, Koch conceded defeat—and Chalmers received his case of wine. Science can study the brain in extraordinary detail, but can it explain what it feels like to see red, taste wine, feel pain or remember a childhood moment? This is what Chalmers called the “hard problem of consciousness”: how do physical processes in the brain give rise to subjective experience? Will neuroscience eventually provide a complete explanation of consciousness, or is there something about our inner experience that scientific methods cannot capture? There will be a short introduction, followed by open discussion. No previous knowledge of philosophy or neuroscience is needed. You do not need to have studied philosophy or arrive with specialist knowledge. Curiosity and a willingness to join the dialogue are enough. The conversation does not have to stop when the formal part ends. People often stay afterwards for a drink and a chat, and that informal part helps Philosophy Cafe become a friendly community rather than just a series of events.
