About this event

Two clubs, one online room, one evening. Mons Toastmasters hosts SHAPE International Toastmasters, chartered in 1992 and one of the oldest clubs in Belgium. SHAPE exists for people from NATO and Partnership nations and the community around them, which means the room is usually more than four or five nationalities deep and nobody in it is precious about accents. The theme is: never give up, never let your arms down. In French, giving up is "baisser les bras", literally lowering your arms. It is a better picture of quitting than anything we have in English, because nobody decides to give up. Your arms just get tired, and one day they are down. What actually happens in the room Somebody gets handed a question they have never seen and has to talk about it for two minutes. That is Table Topics, and it is the part guests are still thinking about on the way home. Members give prepared speeches. On any given night that runs from seven minutes on a childhood memory to a fully staged argument with props. Then somebody stands up and evaluates those speeches out loud, in front of everyone, and manages to leave the speaker wanting to do it again. That last part is the thing Toastmasters is genuinely good at, and it is worth watching once even if you never come back. If you have never done this before You can come and say nothing at all. Nobody is ever called on without agreeing first, and you are welcome to keep your camera off and just watch. Most guests put a hand up anyway, usually about twenty minutes in, once they have worked out that the room is on their side. There is no obligation either way and nobody is keeping score. Bring a first name and a working microphone. That is the whole list. Why attend? • Build confidence in public speaking. • Learn leadership and communication skills that last a lifetime. • Find out how to join and start your own journey. Take the first step toward becoming the speaker and leader you want to be. Practical Monday 11 August, 19:00 CEST. Online, on Zoom.
