Have We Lost Our Sense of the Tragic?

For much of human history, people viewed tragedy as an unavoidable part of life. Ancient Greek dramas, classic literature, and religious traditions often explored the idea that suffering, loss, and even fate are woven into the human condition. Some modern commentators argue that contemporary culture has become less comfortable with this perspective. They suggest that we increasingly assume every problem has a solution, every hardship has a cause that can be identified, and every misfortune can be prevented if the right person or institution is held accountable. Others disagree, arguing that recognizing preventable suffering is a sign of moral progress rather than a loss of wisdom.
