Reading Plotinus with Hadot: Chapter 3 - Presence
About this event
Plotinus is one of the strangest and most rewarding thinkers in the Western tradition — a philosopher whose work reads less like a system and more like a series of maps for looking inward. Pierre Hadot's Plotinus, or the Simplicity of Vision is the best short introduction there is: lucid, personal, and written by a scholar who saw ancient philosophy as a way of life rather than a set of doctrines. Every two weeks we'll take a single chapter, listen to it together, and then open it up for discussion. No prior background in philosophy is required — just curiosity and a willingness to sit with ideas that don't always yield on the first pass. Newcomers are welcome to drop in at any point; each chapter stands well enough on its own. Chapter 3 — Presence Chapter 3 turns outward. Having found the spiritual world within the self, Plotinus now insists it is also outside — everywhere, in the strange, unhurried intelligence of Life itself. Hadot draws out one of the most striking passages in the Enneads: a personified Nature explaining that she creates without planning, without hands, without deliberation. "You should not have questioned me," she says, "but understood in silence." Forms, on this view, are not blueprints imposed from above; they are living wholes that draw themselves. A butterfly's wing, the shape of a leaf — none of it needed a designer working things out step by step. Nature contemplates, and the contemplation itself is the making. From this, Hadot draws the chapter's startling claim: every level of reality is a form of contemplation, and action is only what happens when contemplation weakens. To see rightly is to stop analyzing and start looking — to catch the world as the visible surface of a Life already whole, already present, already looking back.
