Please join us this Sunday to discuss morality. We will be exploring a range of areas, depending on what the group is keen on discussing. Please feel free to bring your own questions. We will meet at the Captain Melville at 2pm for a 2:15pm start sharp. Please note the new $5 mandatory donation entry fee (cash or transfer on day) to help with MeetUp subscription costs. There is no pre-requisite preparation necessary, nor a philosophical background, all that is required is a curious mind. These discussions are both a Socrates Cafe style discussion and lively metaphysical dojo, in the spirit of learning and friendly debate, so please feel free to challenge assumptions and be prepared to have your own assumptions challenged. This event is also posted to the Philosophy Circle group. Questions may include: • Is morality discovered or invented — are there moral facts independent of what any culture or person believes, or is it all construction? • Should we judge actions by their outcomes, their intentions, or the character they express? • Does moral luck exist — should two people who make the same reckless choice be judged differently just because one caused harm and the other didn't? • If two cultures have deeply conflicting moral codes, must one be wrong — or can both be right for their context? • Can morality be thought of as much about effective social co-ordination as about right and wrong? • If you can't prove your deepest moral convictions to someone who disagrees, are you still entitled to hold them with confidence? • Is moral expertise even possible — can someone be more qualified than you to tell you what's right?
