Philosophy Roundtable: Longevity - Who Wants to Live Forever?
About this event
Please join us this Sunday to discuss the philosophical implications of Longevity. Emerging health technologies and research potentially offer the possibility of a (much) longer life. Living longer seems preferable to the alternative, but then some philosophers are deeply critical of the push towards radical longevity. In this session, we will discuss our own perspectives on (radically) increasing longevity. We will meet at Good Nature Hotel at 2pm for a 2:15pm start sharp Please note the new $5 mandatory donation entry fee (cash or transfer on day) to help with MeetUp subscription costs While there is no pre-requisite preparation necessary, he's some suggested listening: Critical of Radical Life Extension https://www.abc.net.au/listen/programs/theminefield/festival-dangerous-ideas-longevity-threatens-future/107047424 (If anyone knows of philosophical supporters of Radical Life Extension, please let me know!) That said, no philosophical background is needed, all that is required is a curious mind. These sessions are both a Socrates Cafe style discussion and a lively metaphysical dojo in the spirit of learning, sharing thoughts and friendly debate. We welcome your self-reflections! In addition feel free to question assumptions and be prepared to have your own assumptions questioned. Possible questions: • Would you like to extend your life expectancy? If so, how much longer would you want to live and why (or if not, why not)? • Would a possible lack of certain death change our relationship to 'the Good Life' or morality? • What are the social implications of radical life extension ? • If longevity technologies exist, should they be made available to everyone? and open to any other questions or curiosities about this topic people might have on the day! Note: We may split into two discussion groups if more than 10 people attend. Hope to see you there!
